Apple’s next big bet on services is podcasts

“This purple app” – that’s what most people think iPhones identify Podcasts App with. Although podcasts have been around for a while, they were more of a niche category. But Apple wants to change it and it made it clear at the Spring Loaded Event. In addition to a number of gadgets, Apple’s revised and updated Podcasts app was presented at the event. What’s new for podcast creators?

Apple has launched a premium subscription service aimed at podcast creators. The service will be available in more than 170 countries including India from May. Podcast creators get features like ad-free listening, access to additional content, and early or exclusive access to new series. Not only that, Apple created a new one too Apple Podcasts for Creators website, where developers can learn more about podcasting, stay up to date on the latest news and features, and read in-depth guides with best practices.
Podcast creators can access an updated Apple Podcasts Connect dashboard, which has new features that make it easier to manage shows in Apple Podcasts. This includes the ability to edit metadata, plan and manage the availability of shows, organize shows in channels, manage multiple users and roles. and learn how listeners interact with their shows through new performance metrics and visualization tools. Using Apple Podcasts Connect, developers can sign up for the new Apple Podcasters program, which provides access to all of the tools needed to create and distribute premium subscriptions to Apple Podcasts.

What’s new for listeners in podcasts?

Apple is updating the Podcasts app with iOS 14.5, which will be available next week. With iOS 14.5, listeners can access a redesigned Apple Podcasts app with an expanded Search tab that provides quick access to key charts and categories. Apple Podcasts also has new pages for each show and episode to make it easy to follow, listen, and share. With the new Smart Play button, listeners can automatically start episodic shows from the latest episode and serialized shows from the beginning of each series. Listeners can now also save individual episodes that are downloaded for offline viewing. This makes it easy to bookmark podcasts for later listening in the library.
Podcasts are a niche, but rivals like Spotify have placed big bets on it. Monetizing podcasts remains a major challenge for most developers, and Apple wants to change that with its premium subscription service. Will podcasts help make the next big leap?
