NEW DELHI: If you use a vaccine tracker website or tool like Paytm vaccine finder, VaccinateMe.in Covid-19 Vaccine Tracker, GetJab.in and others to check slots then there is some “bad news”. The government has released a new update to the public Co-WIN API that increases the availability dates for cache appointments up to 30 minutes. This means that if you use third party trackers to check the availability of a vaccination slot in real time, you will see old results. Given the rush to book slots, a 30 minute delay could mean that the slot will be missed.
“CoWIN Public APIs to determine the availability of appointments and to Download vaccination certificates. These APIs can be used by any third party application. The data on the availability of appointments is cached and can be up to 30 minutes old. In addition, these APIs have a rate limit of 100 API calls per 5 minutes per IP. Please keep these points in mind when using the APIs in your application ”, it says on the API Setu website.
The current real-time availability of the vaccine and the current appointment status are only available on the website CoWin Platform and Aarogya Setu App.
For those who don’t know, these third party websites are not created by the Government of India and are created by individuals just to help you provide notifications of open slots. You need to register and book a spot on the Aarogya Setu or CoWin website to receive the vaccine.
Due to the lag in cache timing and API call rate, the notifications you also get about vaccine availability may not be of much use. It is therefore very advisable to visit the CoWin website for correct availability and to book a slot for yourself.
India has opened the Covid-19 vaccination program to all citizens over the age of 18. While the whole process is digital and quite easy to register, the biggest challenge is getting a confirmed appointment. Due to the lack of Covid-19 vaccines in the country, due to the lack of Covid-19 vaccines in the country, it has become quite a chore to book a slot and ultimately get the vaccine. These third-party vaccine trackers keep you up to date with real-time availability, but the new API update will likely affect their reliability.
